Though I’m not going to link to the post itself. I don’t want to bring up an older post directly like that. I will be pasting all the text here though. I just feel that, given this site’s current social conditions, it deserves to see the light once more.
Some pieces of the text has been edited, but the message remains the same.
I used to follow the Motor Authority Facebook page. Whenever there was a post about any American car, things went normally. ONE post about any sort of Japanese car- even a Toyota 2000GT- all you would get is “Jap crap piece of shit” or “just a fucking toyota LOL!”
Then there are the JDM fanboys who would lash out on ANYTHING that wasn’t Japanese. Specifically on any YouTube video comparing the GT-R with any other car not from Japan, the fanboys would be there with “LOL gtr forever fuck that piece of shit” or “cant even compete bro this shit is stupid.”
Obviously these aren’t exactly what you’d find, but you get my point.
And then there are people who take a look at my Kinja name (TheHondaBro), or notice I like Japanese cars, and assume I’m some JDM-obsessed fanboy who worships rice burners and stancenation, and therefore deserve to be scolded. Just because I take a liking to Japanese cars doesn’t mean I’m into that kind of culture, and it doesn’t mean I’m a Honda fanboy.
It’s this kind of animosity in the car world that really irritates me. I used to have a friend who would shit on me constantly about innocently liking BMW and Honda, and go on relentlessly praising Ford like he usually does, even though one of his old Fords tried to kill him. He didn’t take lightly to the fact that I didn’t like the 2013 Mustang even though I experienced one in person.
I like to say that, to be a true car person, you must be impartial and respect all cars. You don’t have to like all cars though. I like Japanese cars, but I also respect the shit out of muscle cars and European luxury cars as well. Just because you don’t like a specific car, doesn’t mean it’s a terrible car, or that you deserve to lash out on anyone who happens to like it, and vice versa.
That’s my quick rant.

I can respect all cars as appliances, but narrow it any more than that and you’ve lost me.
EG: Corolla. It goes from A to B. Therefore it works as an appliance. BUT: It isn’t the most comfortable, the quietest, most economical, and obviously not the best handling, best looking or anywhere near fastest. Nor does it feel special.
In other words; It makes sense if you just so happened to walk into the nearest dealer and said “I’d like a car, please. That one’s close to the exit, I’ll take it.” On any other level there is nothing to justify it. I was going to use the Prius as an example, but that does feel special to some people, the ones who get a kick out of the smug value.

Just some heavy elitism. Not pointing fingers or anything, just an observation.

Car people acting like car people. Everyone is better than everyone else. I just got off a thread where I was trying to tell someone BMW is better than Chevy, and they the opposite to me. Doesn’t do any good. People have their favorites and will always vote along party lines if you will.

Although a little shit talking now and again is all in good fun too.

No, I’ve been noticing this stuff right here.
(Just think about what Oppo was like when the new Camaro was revealed.)

Car guys vs. Fanboys. Do you see the difference in the maturity level here? We aren’t car boys. We are car guys. Older. Wiser. We like what we like for whatever reason, but respect the rest for their position in the automotive world (even Corollas, Sentras and Civics). In the end, fanboys need to get over themselves and car guys need to not engage them so much . We just get angry and at the end of the day, they haven’t changed our minds.

I’m proud of the fact that I like at least one thing that every manufacturer makes, and I’ve managed to quash the biases that my father and friends in HS pounded into me. Now when folks talk about how one brand sucks, or one brand is better than all others, I just sigh and go on about my business, because it’s near impossible to convince them otherwise anyway.

I feel like Euro cars, specially German cars get a lot of stick here for unreliability and so on, in my experience it’s not like that, I know Americans are sorta used to very standard and simple maintenance due to the infrastructure you have and very low amounts of it, but man, my Golf has been pretty reliable and so have been every Euro/German car I’ve owned (except a run in with my VW dealer when we had the Passat, but that’s not the cars fault)
Regarding the Camaro, I think car cults are very finnicky about that sort of thing and you know Camaro gets a lot of hate, specially from Ford guys (of which there are SOOOOOOOO many both on FP and here) and I think that whole stupidity situation is mainly sponsored by the huge circle jerk Oppo has for certain cars (with merit and without some times), lately Ford has been at the center of said circle jerk and the Camaro was just collateral damage here, but in other car circles/places/sites there is a lot of over-appreciation for the Camaro too, I think it’s a damn good car for the money, though I’m a Mustang man myself...
